Aug9WedAugust 9, 2017Change – Some say that change is never easy, but there are some changes we do love! It might be a new outfit to wear or
new car to drive. Personally, I love it when my daughter changes her baby’s diaper and doesn’t expect me to do it for her!
Life is filled with changes. Sometimes life will bring a change we never expected. Like when Peter took a step out of the
boat and onto the water, it was only by keeping his eyes on Jesus that he could navigate unexpected changes!
Have you ever looked back in life and thought “I had no idea that was going to happen!” Whatever stage in life you find
yourself right now, one thing is for certain – life brings changes to you sooner or later – it always does!
When I graduated from high school, I spent a summer with an evangelistic team in Belize, Central America. When the
plane landed, a stairway was rolled out to the plane for us to exit. I’ll always remember getting that first blast of the local
temperature and the incredible hot air!
Growing up in Chicago there were hot days, especially sitting in the outfield bleachers at Wrigley Field, but nothing like
what I felt on that first mission trip! I thought to myself “Lord, where am I?” Later that day when the temperatures cooled
and night came, I looked up into the sky and I again thought “Lord, where am I?” Never in my life had I seen so many
stars, or such bright stars! Psalm 19:1 tells us: “The heavens declare the glory of God.” It was as though God was teaching
me a new lesson.
Psalm 139:7-9 (ERV) “Your Spirit is everywhere I go. I cannot escape your presence. If I go up to heaven, you will be there. If I go down to the place of death, you will be there. If I go east where the sun rises or go to live in the west beyond the sea, even there you will take my hand and lead me. Your strong right hand will protect me.”
Joshua 1:9 (NIV) “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for
the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
My hot summer in Belize ended and I returned to the bright street lights of Chicago. It was in that year I had learned the
lesson that even when life is filled with changes and challenges, God is always there helping me through life. The city lights
might prevent seeing many stars, but I’ve never forgotten that, like the stars just beyond our sight, God’s presence is also
always there. His Spirit came to abide with us and never leave us no matter what we have gone through or what changes
We have all gone through many life changes, let me encourage you that now is the time to know and trust God’s character
even more. His love is never ending and His mercies are new every morning! The more you know now that God can be
trusted, the more you will trust Him in the future.
As I begin this new and wonderful season of my life, my prayer is that I can be an encouragement to you to see the nighttime
stars and trust God through whatever changes come, they always do!
