The Ruler Will Be Cast Out

Journey To The Cross - Day 10

    John 12:27-33 (ESV)
27 “Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But for this purpose I have come to this hour. 28 Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven: “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.” 29 The crowd that stood there and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to him.” 30 Jesus answered, “This voice has come for your sake, not mine. 31 Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out. 32 And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” 33 He said this to show by what kind of death he was going to die.

THE RULER WILL BE CAST OUT

Jesus had just finished telling His disciples that the hour had now come for Him to die.  Jesus knew the plan and the purpose of Him dying on the cross, yet His soul was troubled.

The Bible doesn’t explain what is meant by “Now is my soul troubled.”  It is a mystery we can never fully understand.  Can anyone comprehend how God’s only Son could die for us? Yet, it is in this truth that we are invited to have faith and find comfort in our troubled soul.

David expressed his “troubled soul” in Psalm 6:3.  We can all look back to times when we have felt personal anguish and longing for relief.  Like Jesus, it may not have been due to personal sin, yet the anguish felt was real.  Words may fall short to explain our own experience, but Jesus knows exactly what we have each felt.

Romans 5:18 “One man's sin brought guilt to all people. So also one right act made all people right with God.”  Through the sacrifice of Jesus, the victory over the devil was won. With faith in Christ alone, we are told to resist the devil and the devil will flee. Through Christ alone, we are made right with God.

The crowds on that day heard something, but few understood.  Jesus even went on to explain the message was all about Him.  The victory over the devil is based on His sacrificial death.  Victory and peace for our troubled soul come through faith in His finished work on the cross.  The final victory over sin, death and the devil is coming.  Remember, Christ's victory is already secured and the devil's defeat is sure.  The Ruler of this world will be cast out and we will be with the Lord forever.
